“Life in CUHK is like a cup of good coffee –– bittersweet.”

Aromatic – Environment

The beauty and serenity of the campus captivates the hearts of CUHK-ers. You can stroll freely under the red leaves by the Lake Ad Excellentiam in Autumn, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate with the stunning view of Tolo Harbour in Winter, wait for the school bus by the side of the blossoming Azalea in Spring and swim with friends in the crystal clear pool in Summer. What a joy it is to study in such a picturesque campus.

Acidic – Travel

Travelling within this spacious and hilly campus could be a joy to hikers but a big headache to most. You probably have to rush from one college to another under the sun with your backpack and laptop. If you are lucky enough, you may be able to catch a school bus. But the challenge comes when you squeeze in a crowded school bus and balance yourself as it goes downhill — this is probably as physically challenging as practising hot yoga!

Intense – School work

Mentioning course selection and CUSIS to CUHK-ers, their distressed faces will tell you a lot. Registering to your desired courses in CUHK can be more difficult than you think. Some courses are either full or clash with your schedule. A little extra luck is what you need.

CUHK is also ‘well-known’ for its demanding study load. Within a 14-week semester, you may have to submit 3 to 5 assignments, sit for 1 midterm and 1 final exam for each course. Some sacrifice on sleep, leisure time and social gatherings may be deemed unavoidable for most. Your study load may seem a bit overwhelming at times but it might lead to enhanced learning strategies and success in your academic pursuit.

Creamy – Friendship

This bitterness of coffee can best be offset with a little cream and sugar. Being able to study and make friends with people from different backgrounds makes university life more interesting. You help each other to overcome adversities and share the joy of learning. Also, taking part in different activities and student societies helps you to expand your social circles and horizons as well as enables you to experience your university life more fully. Meeting lifelong friends and even your better-half is definitely not a myth in CUHK.

Rich – Facilities

The spacious campus and its world class facilities definitely add flavour to your university life. You can have free access to libraries and learning areas on campus. Life on campus is not limited to academic pursuit, recreational and athletic activities are also on offer. For outdoor lovers, CUHK boasts an Olympic-sized swimming pool, indoor stadiums, gymnasia, tennis and squash courts, football fields, weight training rooms and a Water Sports Centre. Believe it or not, there are over 38 canteens on campus. Not only can you enjoy Chinese and Western cuisine, you will probably be surprised to find Shanghai-ese cuisine, Halal food and even a karaoke lounge in CUHK!

Lively – Activities

You will have no problem in filling up your schedule as there are plenty of fun activities and societies in CUHK. Sir Run Run Shaw Hall offers a wide range of cultural activities including dramas, musical performances, art and craft classes, exhibition, etc. In addition, “The Banquet of Thousand People” is a not-to-be-missed event.

Students can unleash their potential through participating in various extra-curricular activities and student societies. The CUHK Singing Contest is a great platform for students to show off their singing talent. While the CUHK Debate team has won a lot of trophies, too. Sporty students may try out for the Rowing team and muscle up as they engage in the training and team work. And there are various exchange and overseas internship programmes which you may opt to participate in to enhance cross cultural experiences.

Savouring a Balanced Cup of Coffee

When you grow tired of studying, imagine yourself sitting by the window feasting your eyes on the stunning view of Tolo Harbour. As you sit back and relax, you take a sip of this lovely cup of coffee which combines an intense floral aroma and slightly acidic flavour with a rich, creamy and lively body. It will definitely re-energize you after a busy and productive day. Appreciate the beautiful scenery, warm and caring people as well as exciting opportunities in CUHK. Your university days will pass by really quickly when you fully utilize the chance to enrich your life and expand your horizons in order to prepare yourselves for more challenges in life.
